Gunpla scales explained

Gunpla, short for “Gundam Plastic Model,” is a hobby of building and customising model kits of robots from the popular Japanese anime and manga series Mobile Suit Gundam. One of the essential aspects of Gunpla building is the scale of the models, as each scale offers its own set of benefits and challenges.

1/144 scale

The 1/144 scale is the most popular scale for Gunpla models, offering a balance between size, detail, and affordability. Models in this scale are small enough to display on a shelf or desk yet large enough to handle and customise easily, and often come with a variety of accessories and weapons.

1/100 scale

The 1/100 scale is a step up from 1/144, offering a more impressive display. These models are more detailed and often have more articulation for greater posing options, though they are more expensive and larger to handle.

1/60 scale

The 1/60 scale is the largest common scale for Gunpla, offering incredible detail and realism with intricate paint applications, making these kits perfect for display. They also require the most space.

Other scales

Several other scales are available too, including 1/48, 1/35 and even 1/12. These are less common and often cater to a specific niche within the Gunpla community.

Whichever you choose — the affordability of 1/144, the display presence of 1/100, or the detail of 1/60 — Gunpla is a fun, rewarding hobby and a creative outlet for fans of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.
